Biomass stocks in California’s fire-prone forests: mismatch in ecology and policy

چکیده

Abstract Restoration of fire-prone forests can promote resiliency to disturbances, yet such activities may reduce biomass stocks levels that conflict with climate mitigation goals. Using a set large-scale historical inventories across the Sierra Nevada/southern Cascade region, we identified underlying climatic and biophysical drivers forest characteristics projected how restoration these manifest under future climate. Historical conditions varied site moisture availability but were generally characterized by low tree density (∼53 trees ha −1 ), live basal area (∼22 m 2 (∼34 Mg high pine dominance. Our predictions reflected broad convergence in structure, frequent fire is most likely explanation for this convergence. Under (2040–2069), hotter sites become more prevalent, nearly ubiquitously favoring densities, biomass, Based on projections, region be unable support aboveground >40 2069, value approximately 25% current average stocks. Ultimately, restoring resilient will require adjusting carbon policy match limited region.

Evolutionary ecology of resprouting and seeding in fire-prone ecosystems.

There are two broad mechanisms by which plant populations persist under recurrent disturbances: resprouting from surviving tissues, and seedling recruitment. Species can have one of these mechanisms or both. However, a coherent framework explaining the differential evolutionary pressures driving these regeneration mechanisms is lacking. We propose a bottom-up approach in addressing this questio...

Managing fire-prone forests in the western United States

within the national forests of the west, is one of the most contentious natural resource issues in the US today. One recent response to the controversy is the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA) of 2003 (Public Law 108-V148). This law has potentially profound consequences for forests and their biodiversity and must therefore be implemented on the basis of the best scientific information and ...

Estimation of biomass, carbon stocks and soil sequestration of Gowatr mangrove forests, Gulf of Oman

The mangrove forest ecosystem is known to possess a variety of ecosystem services, including high rates of carbon sequestration, storage and mitigating climate change through reduced deforestation. This study was carried out in the mangrove forests of Gowatr Bay, Gulf of Oman during 2017-18 to quantify biomass and carbon stocks of all components of this forest, including live and dead trees, so...

Ecology of Fire-Tolerant Podocarps in Temperate Australian Forests

Podocarpus drouynianus and P. spinulosus are two unusual conifers restricted to southwestern and eastern Australia, respectively. The species are morphologically similar and genetically closely related to each other but rather distant from other members of the subgenus Foliolatus. Both species have retained ancestral podocarp characteristics such as dioecy, wind pollination, and large, animaldi...

The Carbon Conundrum — Fire and Fuel Management in Fire-prone Forests

Natural resource managers face a conundrum: when do fire management activities increase sources or sinks of greenhouse gases? This extension note describes forest carbon (C) dynamics and approaches for dealing with carbon stocks and flows while managing for fire and a full range of natural resource values. In addressing climate change, we need to understand the relationships between fire manage...
